At almost every home inspection with a sump system , I end up recommending some type of change for safety, performance, or both. Here are five common sump system defects, in no particular order. This is a safety issue because a small child could drown if they fell in to a sump basket. Ideally, the sump cover should also be airtight. This will help to prevent radon gases from entering the home, as well as moist air.

A check valve should be installed on the discharge pipe to prevent water in the discharge tubing from dumping back in to the sump basket after the pump shuts off. Using undersized discharge tubing, even at the exterior, will force the pump to run longer each time it turns on, decreasing the life of the pump. Some smaller pumps may come with an adapter for a garden hose, but those are the exception.HOW TO CONNECT A GARDEN HOSE - GregTheGardener
The fix for this condition is simple; use larger tubing. When a sump pump discharges water right up against the house at the exterior, where does the water go?
I would like to connect a garden hose to my sump pump on a temporary basis. Since this is smaller than the 1 1/2" pipe normally used, is there. Once the adaptor is in place, connect the garden hose to the pump. This fitting also needs to be snug, but do not over-tighten. Carefully lower the pump back into. The Wayne pump has, what looks like, a standard garden hose (1" Seems that I need to design my pump installation with that in mind and.
Right back down in to the sump system! While this might seem to be extremely obvious, experience has told me that it might not be, because this is a very common defect.
Sump pump hook up to garden hose
The discharge tube from the sump system should terminate at a point where the water will drain away from the building. I typically remove my discharge hose at the exterior in the fall, but I forgot to do it last year. Water ended up freezing inside the tubing, completely blocking it.
One morning I noticed a low humming noise that never stopped, and I found my sump pump running continuously, unable to pump the water out. I can only imagine how long the pump had been running before I found out about it, and how many years of service this stupid mistake might have removed from my pump. Simply have the sump pump discharge to an air gap.

What you are doing by using the smaller discharge is creating excess back pressure on the pump and basically reducing its effeciency and the life of the pump. If you are wise enough to invest in a Zoeller, Do yourself a favor, and upgrade the discharge to handle the performance of that pump.
With that being said, I chose not to go with the above in my home. The previous owner installed a sump pit, and garden hose discharge attatched to a generic pump.
Pump failed when I used it to pump water out of the forms for my driveway oops. I replaced the pump with another small big box special, because my sump only saw water this spring for the first time in 5 years.
I saw no reason to put a pile of 20's into the hole for something that gets used very very little.

If I had a situation where there was water constantly, I would go with the zoeller, and the 1. Last edited: Sep 4, Joined: Jul 15, Occupation: Water well and pump tech. Location: Riverview, Fl.
The garden hose will handle about 7 gpm on average and that's with more pressure than that pump can deliver. The 1. I am not familiar with Zoeller pumps model 's so I can't tell you what to expect in gpm from it, but any decent sump pump will do at least 30 gpm.
Designed for a /4 in. female threaded sump or utility pump, this garden hose .. washer, would this work to connect a metal drain tailpipe to a garden hose?. /4" Male NPT on one end; Accepts 3/4" standard garden hose on the other end; Threads into many utility pumps to allow use of a standard garden hose for. Some smaller pumps may come with an adapter for a garden hose, but of corrugated tubing for under $10, and connecting these is a piece of.
If you restrict that to 5 gpm and your sump is filling at 10 gpm, where is the extra water supposed to go? Pike and Bob. Both great points.
