Optical ages and luminescence characteristics of quartz and feldspar from Calvert Island, British Columbia central coast, Canada. Conference Paper.

The Quaternary history of the central coast of British Columbia BCCanada is poorly understood, but recent research in the area suggests that it has a unique glacial history, postglacial sea levels remained remarkably stable, and archaeological evidence exists for human occupation for at least the last 10, years. Though radiocarbon ages have provided a crude temporal framework for these events, a more robust chronology can be achieved by combining them with luminescence ages.

New optical age information for samples collected from Calvert Island will be reported and procedures used to fine-tune and test our laboratory procedures to the character of feldspar in the region will be discussed. Feldspar signals, however, are brighter, appear to be suitable for the application of our laboratory procedures, and have fading rates that are diverse, but within the range of those measured from feldspar from other parts of the region.

Initial optical age estimates show consistency with independent radiocarbon age control.

Quartz optically stimulated luminescence OSL dating has been applied to sandy beach ridge systems from the Magdalen Islands in the center of the Gulf of St. Lawrence Quebec, Canada to provide the first chronological framework for these features. Nineteen beach ridges 22 samples from four different sites throughout the archipelago were investigated.

At one of the sites, samples were taken at 9 m and 7. The average dose recovery ratio of all samples is 1.

The OSL ages are internally consistent and supported by independent age control radiocarbon. The OSL ages indicate that the ridges were built between 2.

This rise eroded adjacent sandstone cliffs, which contributed a significant sediment supply to the littoral drift and beaches. The late Holocene ages obtained in this study indicate that these processes have been active for at least the past two thousand years.
