You know who taught you and how from infancy you have known the holy writings, which are able to give you wisdom for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. Ecclesiastes is inspired scripture. As we continue in this study today, there is one fact that is not up for debate. That fact is that Ecclesiastes is inspired scripture and therefore profitable. While many may debate the author, date, meaning, setting, and even its divine inspirationwe will not debate whether or not it is scripture and inspired.

Accepting Solomonic authorship allows one to easily accept canonicity due to the many other accepted canonical writings of Solomon Proverbs, Song of Solomon. Many, naturally, want to look at Ecclesiastes as a linear writing. It does not appear to fall into that category. While it does have some structure, it more or less freely moves between many topics.

While it is freely moving, it is moving into a specific conclusive direction. Garrett 3 offers a good outline of the book in the following. While other beneficial outlines are offered the outline above displays well the manner in which the book seems to have been written. While Solomon was working toward a conclusive point, he did so in a cyclical manner. Even though he wrote in such a manner, much of our study will be linear.

No one we know is the kind of person Job was, and very likely no one we know suffered to the extent Job did. But Qoheleth makes sure that we can identify with the examples he offers.

The end result is that frustrations and adversity cannot be avoided. So what does his worldview offer? The solution suggested in chapter 7 is that we should not try to avoid frustration and adversity. A God-centered worldview is willing to accept both prosperity and adversity as coming from the divine hand.

The Book of Ecclesiastes

Here Qoheleth deals not with cause that is, that God causes our frustrationsbut with the idea that adversity serves a useful purpose in shaping us as individuals and particularly as people of faith. This is precisely the attitude Job took in the face of his troubles:. The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; may the name of the Lord be praised.

Much of chapters 89 concerns adjusting our expectations of this world. That is followed by warnings in chapter 10 about the power and effects of foolish behavior.
